Poushal or Filaments is the favorable saffron type among home users and many businesses. Poushali includes 1-8 mm long style. therefore, in case the stigma is cut along with a bit of style, Poushal saffron is produced. The length of the style is the main factor in distinguishing different qualities of Poushal saffron type. some experts believe that Poushali saffron contains all saffron benefits as there is a bit of style attached to each strand. Poushal is publicly trusted more as there is little probability of manipulating the saffron, thus, this type is generally viewed as pure saffron. In this blog, we are going to explore more details about Poushal saffron type.
Poushal /Filaments saffron includes 1-8 mm style and is known as a qualified saffron after the All-Red saffron category. Therefore, the saffron have less coloring power than the All Red category. The Poushal coloring power varies in different qualities, because the length of style and the plants’ genetics differs in each Poushali product. Generally, Poushal coloring power ranges between 200-230 units as it contains more style. Farmers yield 1 kg filament saffron from 80-100 kg saffron flower, depending on the stigma thickness and size.
Poushal/ Filaments is categorized into three different grades, based on the length of style, and coloring power and some other physical specifications. Obviously, the more saffron style it contains, the lower the grade is.
Grade One Poushal includes 1-4mm style, and has a moderate coloring power. In Grade One, the stigmas are thicker, lighter red color, compared to Grade Two. Moreover, there are some wavy and separated strands.
Iranian Grade Two Poushal includes 4-8mm style, making them weaker in terms of appearance and coloring power. This grade is similar to La Mancha or Mancha Spanish saffron type. This grade contains more crumbled, normal thickness saffron.
Grade Three Poushal includes 8-10 mm styles and is weaker than Grade Two, in terms of coloring power and stigma redness. In this grade, the stigma is weak, fragile, thin, and somehow loose. This quality is the result of poor flower growth conditions such as little irrigation, weak soil and fertilizer, and weak saffron corm.
