What is Saffron Toxicity and How to Deal with That?

Several studies have evaluated saffron chemical ingredients and properties, including safranal, crocin, and picrocrocin for toxicity in labs. The results of such studies show that saffron is not toxic once it is consumed in small amounts. Not only is saffron not toxic, but it has several therapeutic effects when it is used in safe amounts. What is saffron toxicity?

Saffron toxicity refers to potential health drawbacks when this spice is used in excessive amounts. Saffron is valued for its extraordinary health effects while using large quantities of saffron will lead to adverse effects.

The primary active compounds in saffron, including crocin, safranal, and picrocrocin have been tested for potential poisoning and toxicity effects. The results show that this spice is not inherently toxic, yet it can cause some severe health issues once they are taken in excessive doses.

Saffron poisoning symptoms

Saffron poisoning is relatively rare, yet it is caused by intentional or unintentional excessive amounts of this spice. The symptoms of saffron toxicity are more severe than simple side effects of saffron and should be taken seriously. The below symptoms are indicators of saffron poisoning:

Gastrointestinal distress: Severe gastrointestinal symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea can be caused as a result of using large amounts of saffron.

Neurological effects: Neurological effects such as dizziness, headache, confusion, seizures, headaches, and loss of consciousness in severe cases are possible as a result of saffron poisoning.

Uterine stimulation: Uterine contraction, especially during pregnancy, can lead to premature labor or miscarriage, which is so dangerous for the health and well-being of both the baby and mother.

Jaundice: Yellowing of eyes, as a result of liver dysfunction, can cause jaundice in some people.

It is better to ask for professional medical assistance in case of saffron poisoning. It is not possible to treat saffron poisoning at home with normal medical procedures. The patient needs emergency medical assistance in case of saffron toxicity. If left untreated, the symptoms become more severe or may lead to more complicated conditions.

How much saffron is toxic?

For a normal adult person with no background health issues, it is safe to take up to 30 mg of saffron per day. However, it is not recommended to include saffron in daily routine as it can be an excessive amount for the body to metabolize. Large amounts of saffron, nearly 5 grams, can be toxic and poisonous. If taken in higher doses, near 12-20 grams, the person will die. For pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, it is recommended to consult with their doctor about saffron consumption during pregnancy.
