The exact date of the festival varies as it should be celebrated on a moonless night in October or November. Diwali is a very famous Indian festival that is aimed to bring joy and happiness to lives, remind people to forgive past unpleasantness and the defeat of good over evil. What is the story behind Diwali?

It is said that Diwali celebrates Lord Rama’s defeat of Ravana’s evil spirit. Indian Diwali celebration lasts five days. Hindus have special ceremonies on each day. However, on the third day, the main event takes place.

The day before the start of Diwali, named “Chotti Diwali,” is traditionally known as the final opportunity to run the last-minute errands and preparations. The day before the Diwali festival is a great time to decorate the floors with flower petals, coloring powders. These creative floral and geometrical designs are known as “rangoli.”

The first two days of Diwali are known as a good opportunity to buy kitchen metallic appliances.  Hindus believe this will bring good luck to their lives.

As mentioned earlier, the main celebration occurs on the third day. The main joy occurs right after sunset when people start their celebration by saying prayers to Ganesh and Lakshmi goddesses. Fireworks, arranging clay lamps around the house, a sweet, delicious dinner, and cultural parties are examples of what Hindus do on the third day.

The fourth-day rituals vary across different parts of India. Businessmen, chefs, artists, or other professions show their gratitude and respect for their working tools. However, this is what people in north India do. In other regions, there may be different rituals. 

On the last day of Diwali, the sisters are supposed to pray for their brother’s well-being and receive sweetmeats in return.

Regular foods during Diwali include Halwa, Laddoo, Barfi, Peda, Jalebi, Soan papdi, Roshogolla, Rasmalai, Sandesh, Lyangcha, Mohanthal, Shrikhand, Karanji, Puran Poli, Shahi Tukda, Nevri, Mysore Pak, Payasam, and many others.
